MONGOOSE GRAY

I spy with my little eye... Front End Developer.

London, UK Permanent

Bees have 5 eyes. Scorpions have 12. Box jellyfish have 24.

Did we catch your eye? Great! Then feast your eyes on this… (don’t worry we’ll run out of idioms soon enough).

We’re a fast-growing startup on a mission to turn a traditional industry upside down. By the way, you’re actually seeing this ad upside down. It is your brain which is turning everything the right way up. Cool huh? Aye.

And what’s this? We’re talking eyes again.

The Anablep or 4-eyed fish can see both above and below the water at the same time. Whereas the eyes of a chameleon are independent of each other, allowing it to look in two different directions at once.

Under the right conditions, a human eye can detect the light from a candle up to 15 miles away. Which is about the same sort of distance you’ll need to be located from our Central London offices. We do support WFH but we are building a culture as well as a product so...

We’re in hyper-growth mode. This job is fast-paced like an Indiana Jones film. Except it won’t end with your eyes melting or propellers slicing your head off. Hopefully.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. Goats have rectangular pupils to give them a wide field of vision. The night vision of tigers is six times better than that of humans. But you can sleep easy - we don’t work nights anymore - we’re well past the open-all-hours caffeine and pizza stage.

Scientists don’t know why we cry when we’re upset or excited. There is seemingly no biological link. One thing’s for sure though, we’re very excited about this next step of our product roadmap.

Must-have exposure (pun intended)? Angular, Typescript, HTML, CSS. For you, software isn’t a job, it’s a craft. You’ve got a GitHub repository. You’re involved in meetups and communities. You own a hat and a whip (optional).

You live and breathe front-end development. You have an eagle eye for detail. Building scalable and robust solutions is second nature to you. Your code is clean and maintainable. And most importantly, highly performant over large datasets.

We're not born with tears. Babies might cry from day one but won’t actually produce tears for about 6 weeks. Which is about the time it will take you to get to grips with our ecosystem.

The human eye can differentiate about 10 million different colours. You probably won’t need that many in this job. But you will need meticulous attention to detail - there’s that eagle eye again - and a passion for building ultra-high-quality user interfaces.

The first humans to walk the planet had brown eyes. Blue eyes didn’t evolve until about 5,000 years ago, which is like yesterday on the evolutionary timeline. Trivia quiz aficionados might like to know that “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” was a 1977 hit for American country singer Crystal Gayle.

In the same vein, crossword and Scrabble® (see what we did there, we’re all about attention to detail) aficionados might enjoy the following unusual eye-related words: Heterochromia is a condition where eyes are two different colours. Ommetaphobia is the fear of eyes. Glabella is the name given to the space between your eyebrows.

Here are some other unusual words that you ought to be familiar with: NextJS, React, Python.

Some of this job will be lot of fun. You'll enjoy huge amounts of ownership and autonomy. That's startups for you. You'll get to innovate, champion new ways of doing things and push the envelope of the user experience to such dizzying heights that it’ll have you sneezing with your eyes wide open. (Psst... you can’t).

Some of it will be partly fun. You’ll get to create new eye-catching (sorry) features but also have to refactor existing code to improve application performance.

Some of it will be no fun. You’ll be expected to contribute to the analysis, troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues. Boo hiss.

Pirates wore earrings because they believed it improved their eyesight. We don’t do guesswork, but instead work closely with the product team to translate business requirements into technical solutions. And that’s what you’ll do too.

And you’ll want to stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and cutting-edge technology. Talking of which, did you know that scientists have actually used shark corneas for human corneal transplant surgery as they’re so similar?

Imagine by now you're getting the picture.

Your iris has more than 250 unique characteristics which is why iris scanning security protocols are often seen as the gold standard. Which is exactly what we’re looking for. No prizes for silver medallists here. Soz.

We’re a small, friendly and collaborative bunch. It’s your typical startup office space really. A few rows of desks and laptops. Some bean bags and a foosball table. And some sweets on reception. But the £ isn’t your usual startup peanuts. We're looking at £80,000 plus excellent benefits if you have an experienced eye. (And a little less if you haven’t sharpened your focus just yet).

Do you think we’d see eye-to-eye? Then shoot us your CV and a short covering letter. That’s right, you don’t go fishing (for Anableps or anything else) without a hook.

And just to say thanks for reading all the way to the end, here’s another fun fact about eyes...

If you live to the average age, your eyes will have processed more than 25 million images during your lifetime. And 1 million boring job ads.
